No good stories [Dec. 26th, 2009|10:48 am]

purrevil
I survived dinner at Kev's nieces and while crowded, it really wasn't bad.  The umpteen children were either outside or in the basement, I barely saw them.  In looking at niece's bookshelves, it turns out she and I have similar tastes in reading materials-urban fantasy. She likes Twilight, but other than that...

So, she loaned me a series by Melissa Marr about fairies.  I have to say the cover designs are pretty awesome.  Beautifully done.  How often do I say that about a book?

Also, [info]bray_max got me a new series of books, I can't remember the author but some of the titles are Gideon and  Damien.  Tam says they are urban fantasy from a man's POV.

Kevin also got me the latest Merry Gentry and the first book in a series by Lilith Saintcrow.  I am well booked for the holidays.  I am not sure where to start reading honestly.  But....I picked up Merry.

I gave Kevin The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown (a gift I can enjoy too) and he's just about a quarter of the way through.  His first book since school started that wasn't school-related.  No reading for pleasure during the semester, remember.  Although I didn't follow that rule this semester-probably why I got a B.

Today we head back.  We may get to see [info]friendbrian but they are in Boise so not sure if that's going to happen.  We'll see.  We are also supposed to drop in and see Gerry, another friend.

Oh, talked to Kev's sis, she of the living shit timebomb.  She chastised us for not stopping by on Christmas Eve.  I told her that she didn't ask, she goes, "But you always stop"  Because you always ask.  Whatever, I had enough on T-day, I'm good for awhile.  We are not stopping on the way home.

Harry Potter Series Best of the Year List RoundUp [Dec. 26th, 2009|12:02 pm]
leaky_cauldron
As newspapers continue to take stock of this past decade, the books and films of the Harry Potter series make an appearance on a number of new end of the year lists.  First, the Globe and Mail names the seventh book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, their Book of the Decade.  The Canadian newspaper writes that the book was not only "...the single most awaited, debated and anticipated volum...

Christmas crafts and llamas [Dec. 26th, 2009|11:45 am]

craftgrrl

[distorted_eyes]
This year I'm serving in an AmeriCorps program where I work as a tutor and after school teacher in an urban school. I taught a class called Amazing Animals for 2nd and 3rd graders, and after discovering that classes went much more smoothly if they got to make things, I incorporated more arts and crafts into the class. We spent quite a while on llamas in the class, partly because of the complexity of this project, and partly because I decided to show The Emperor's New Groove as a preview to the llama class. But the kids loved doing the llamas, and they had something to show off at Family Night!

IMG_1117

It was a fun project, and since I rely heavily on the internet for ideas for game and craft ideas for my class, I thought I'd pay it forward by making a tutorial of how I made the llamas. Click here to see the tutorial on my blog"

And It’s Called a “Doughnut,” You Say? [Dec. 26th, 2009|01:32 pm]
cuteoverload

…and yet, if I understand you correctly, it is in fact a baked product, and not a nut at all!  Most intriguing!  And the colorful objects scattered randomly about one side; these are the — what did you call them? — “sprinkles”?   Fascinating!

It’s a world of wonder, Ann S.

Merry Christmas everyone!! (Or, Happy Day in General if you don't celebrate it!)

I dunno if anyone remembers, but a while back, I posted in here with a ring that I made out of a quarter. Many of you asked how I did it, but it's kinda one of those things that's easier to visualize than explain.

So I finally had a day off today and made y'all a video of the process :) It's highly sped up in parts but you get the idea.

Enjoy!

Avocado? & 3 Questions [Dec. 25th, 2009|05:57 pm]

gardening

[fallenfaun]
1) We made guacamole last night and I now have three pretty avocado seeds that I want to try growing. I've always been unsuccessful before so any tips/tricks?

2) I live in N. Virginia (zone 5/6), when should I start seeds inside? Last year mine weren't ready and I had to buy plants from a local farmer's market which is no biggie but I want to start at least some of my own stuff from seed.

3) Our lemon tree blooms 3-4 times a year but we haven't gotten lemons since our friends gave it to us. Does it need another lemon tree to fruit or is there some other reason? The bees love it, so its definetely getting pollinated when its outside in the summer.

Thanks in advance guys!

Reindeer Understudies [Dec. 25th, 2009|05:31 pm]

“Yep, that’s us. If one of the reindeer sprains a fetlock and can’t fly, that’s when we move in. Doesn’t happen often, though;  last time I went up was in ‘73, and Ralph here doubles for Blitzen at shopping center openings.  That’s about it.”

Who knew Santa was so prepared, Paige?

Hey, guess where I am? [Dec. 24th, 2009|11:55 pm]

purrevil
Twin Falls.  With stolen internet at the MIL's.  Woohoo.  At least I can feed my Facebook addiction.

Last night, I decided to make a mini- voodoo elf.  And rather than sew all the raw edges, I used hot glue.  It turned out really nice, and saved me way more time.  I might just start doing that with the bigger ones.   Bigger pics are here.

Voodoo elf

With my hand for scale.

And in the dollar store box that is almost as cool as the doll.

In the ornament exchange, this was VERY popular.  There was no mystery who brought it- but it was traded until it could be traded no more.  I will admit, I love having the best present at the exchange.

Ok, my computer wants to install some updates.  I guess I'll let it.

In the great Cute Overload Christmas Tradition, it’s time for your Annual Marmoset Ear Nom™. Simply wrestle a pygmy Marmoset to the ground and perform a soft-kronche on their ear nubules.

Even if they tilt their heads to the side, they won’t be able to shield their ears forever:

Go on, your furry little morsels await!

Last minute Christmas crafting! [Dec. 24th, 2009|05:55 pm]

[crunk_caitlin]
My stepmom is impossible to get Christmas presents for. She has just about everything, and I never know what she wants. All I really know is that she loves the color pink, martinis, and Corvettes. Last Christmas I etched the Corvette logo in martini glasses, so I kind of used up all of my options for this year and just decided to go with a pink theme.
